Masterclass 2014
by Yanka Hékimova
on the organ of Saint-Eustache Church
Paris

28 July - 10 August 2014

Under the sponsorship of Jean Guillou, who is asking Yanka Hekimova to give this class, ARGOS (the Saint Eustache organ society in Paris) is organizing a master class on the Van den Heuvel organ of the church Saint Eustache in Paris from July 28th to August 10th, 2014.

Learning objectives
During the course, the participants will be able to familiarize themselves with the acoustics of a vast building, and to learn how to adapt their interpretation to it. Works from the repertory and transcriptions will be studied, while constantly seeking to let hear the most clearly possible subtleties of the writing without ever losing sight of the general outline of the piece in order to build a coherent and expressive unit.
A detailed attention will be given to the development of the personality of each participant by stimulating his (her) imagination, by encouraging him (her) and by helping him (her) to work out his (her) interpretation of the pieces presented in harmony with his (her) own sensitivity.

Requirements
• Advanced level students or students embarking on a professional career
• Artistic and esthetic sensitivity

Course outline
The master class will be taught by Yanka Hekimova and will take place on the nave console of the organ of the Saint Eustache church, from Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 12:30 AM.
Participants will play prepared works of their choice, from the Renaissance period to the contemporary, without any restriction. Nevertheless, at least one work of one of the following composers would be appreciated: Félix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms, César Franck, Louis Vierne or Marcel Dupré.
Practice sessions will take place on the organ from the evening through to the following morning prior to the master class.
Practice times will necessarily be limited for each participant given the anticipated number of students and the availability and opening times of the church. ARGOS will organize the timetable for accessing the organ.
Additional practice hours on another organ could be also proposed for personal work.
